Last week’s meeting between Israeli Prime Minister Naftali Bennett and Crown Prince Mohammed bin Zayed of the United Arab Emirates - a landmark visit, if ever there was one - is just the latest example of previously hostile countries seeking reconciliation. A week ago, Saudi Crown Prince Mohammed bin Salman, who helped orchestrate a multinational boycott of neighboring Qatar in 2017 over terrorism charges, traveled to the tiny but influential country on Dec. 8 for a private chat with Qatar’s emir, Sheikh Tamim bin Hamad al-Thani. Nearly a year before Mohammed’s visit, Saudi Arabia, the United Arab Emirates, Bahrain and Egypt restored land, sea and air traffic with the Persian Gulf state after the boycott failed to lead to the changes in Qatari foreign policy that Riyadh and its partners wanted.
